My involvement with shortsea shipping and coastal shipping was mainly at NTUA, and I had two projects there:
·
“Greek
Coastal Shipping: Status, Prospects, and Investment Opportunities” (January -
December 1993). Hellenic Industrial Development Bank (ETBA). See HERE.
·
“Technical
Secretariat, Concerted Action on Shortsea Shipping,” (June 1995- March
2000). Commission of European
Communities, Directorate General for Transport -Transport Research Programme
(multi-partner project, NTUA Leader, H.N. Psaraftis Consortium Manager). See HERE.
The first project was a project that
mapped the Greek coastal shipping system and investigated many issues,
including those related to the impending cabotage deregulation in 2004. I even
wrote a book on the subject, published by the Eugenides Foundation (2006)- see
No. 10 below. That book is both in Greek and in English, as it is an annotated
collection of papers and articles of mine on this subject.
The second project (SSS-CA) was the first of the three EU projects that I coordinated on behalf of NTUA, and dealt with shortsea shipping. It lasted almost five years and provided a platform of dissemination of EU research in shortsea shipping, ports and intermodal transport. The project overlapped significantly with my time as CEO of the port of Piraeus, and through it I met many people from the maritime industry in Europe. It was pretty exciting.
There was a series of SSS “roundtable” conferences, organized by colleagues Niko Wijnolst and Chris Peeters in 1992 (Delft), 1994 (Αthens) and 1996 (Bergen). My appointment as CEO in the port of Piraeus came about a month after the 1996 conference.
